Le Secret : Les Adventures de Pouf
This is your chance to own a very scarce French edition of The Secret, The Adventures of Wonk, also containing the story Le Veilleur de Nuit (the Night Watchman). There are six Wonk titles in Ladybird series 417 of which only two were published in French (The Secret and The Circus). The French editions were only printed once and the print run was estimated to be fairly small compared to their English counterparts. To put the rarity of these French books into context as a collector and dealer in Ladybird for some 12 years I have only ever handled one other copy. These rarely turn up for sale. This is definitely one for the collector. See pictures below.
Written by Muriel Levy, translated by Anne-Marie Menanteau and illustrated by Joan Kiddell-Monroe. Published by Wills et Hepworth, Loughborough, undated but presumed published around the same time as the English edition, if not shortly afterwards (circa 1945 / 46). Hardback book with original dust-jacket. Front board has a picture of Wonk printed in green ink. Illustrated endpapers. Full page colour illustrations on coated paper.
CONDITION
The original dust-jacket is unclipped (even though there is no price to clip) - there are a few very small closed tears to the edges with the large of these extending to 6mm, and there is a little chipping to the head and tail of the spine, but otherwise the jacket remains in good clean condition. The boards and spine are in very good, clean condition. Endpapers are also clean. All contents present and the pages are in lovely clean condition throughout. No previous owner's name or writing, no scribbles, marks, stains or other marks. A lovely clean copy.
