American illustrator Ted Rand dies aged 89
After a long battle with cancer the popular American illustrator Ted Rand died at his home on Mercer Island, US.

Ted Rand was a prolific and energetic artist who initially made his living in portraiture, teaching and advertising art before entering the children's book illustration.

Rand recently was singled out for the 2005 Kerlan Award, given by one of the world's largest literature research collections, the Kerlan, at the University of Minnesota.

The award recognizes "singular attainments in the creation of children's literature" and donations that advance the study of children's literature.

Rand died just hours before he and his wife, Gloria, were to receive the Literary Lions Award from the King County Library System Foundation.

The award, designed to recognize contributions to literacy and lifelong learning, was based on the Rands' "extraordinary contribution to children's literature," said foundation director Jeanne Thorsen.

Gloria Rand, 79, a children's book author who collaborated on about a dozen books with her husband, canceled plans to attend the Saturday night banquet when she saw that her husband of nearly 60 years was slipping away.

Ted illustrated nearly 80 books in his lifetime.
