Maxwell Armfield was bor in Ringwood, Hampshire in 1882, and was educated at Sidcot and Leighton Park.
As a student at Birmingham School of Art, he was influenced by his fellow students, Henry Payne and Joseph Southall, and by the Pre-Raphaelite paintings in the local art gallery. He continued his studies in Paris and later in Italy.
Commercially Armfield had a very successful career, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy and selling many privately commisioned works.
He was known chiefly for his landscape paintings and his illustrations for books, periodicals and magazines.

He spent a period from 1915 to 1922 in the United States, where he was noted for his paintings of landscapes of the American West.
Though neglected for many years after the Second World War, he lived to see a revival of interest in his work before his death on 23 January 1972, at the age of ninety-one. A memorial show was organised by Southampton Art Gallery in 1978. |
