Mischa Damjan was born in Yugoslavia in 1914.

He spent his childhood in Belgrade and after studying law there, went into practice as a lawyer.

In 1942 he was taken prisoner of war by the Germans and soon began writing stories after escaping to Switzerland three years later - over the following years the experience of telling stories to his five children inspired him to write and sesign his own picture books.

In 1961 he and his wife founded North-South, where his particular skill is in fostering and promoting the talents of new artists.

He retired in 1979 to concentrate on his writing. North-South is now managed by one of his sons and his wife.
