Ralph Steadman was born in Liverpool on May 15, 1936.
Ralph attended Ysgol Emrys Ap Iwan (high school), Abergele, East Ham Technical College and the London College of Printing and Graphic Arts during the 1960s - during this time he did freelance work for Punch, Private Eye, The Daily Telegraph, The New York Times and Rolling Stone magazine.
Ralph Steadman has written and illustrated many books, including I, Leonardo, Sigmund Freud, and The Big I Am.
His pen-and-ink drawings are easy to recognize and have graced such books as Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, as well as classics such as Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island and Animal Farm.

Steadman has also executed numerous record album covers for such artists as Frank Zappa - he is also well-known for his illustrations for the catalogues of the UK off-licence chain Oddbins.
Steadman works in watercolor as well as pen-and-ink, and uses an airbrush to spray-paint background. He has been the winner of the Francis Williams Book Illustration Award, the Gold Award and the Silver Award from the Designers and Art Directors group and the Merit Award from the American Institute of Graphic Arts. He was also named Illustrator of the Year by the latter group. |
