Gail Carson Levine was born in New York City on September 17, 1947.
Gail came from a very creative family - mother wrote full-length plays and her father was interested in writing.
Her parents believed that creativity was an important tool in life and encouraged their children to respect other's creativity as well as their own.
Gail began writing in elementary school, and in high school her poems were published in two anthologies of teenage poetry.
She received her BA in 1969 from City College of the City University of New York.

Gail read many fairy tales as a child, which may account for her genre of writing. While in college, she wrote the script for the children's musical, "Space Napped", with the help of her husband.
Levine found that she could express herself freely in her writing and later took a class of writing and illustrating children's books and it drew her interest.
Gail found that she enjoyed writing fairy tales ?with a twist? and also realistic fiction.
Gail Levine currently lives in brewster, new york in a 200 year-old farmhouse with her husband, david, and their airedale, jake. her husband owns his own computer software business. they both do their work from the house. the interior of the farmhouse is plastered with artwork that relatives, friends, and levine herself painted. the painting used for the cover of "dave at night" is also found on a wall in Gail's home. |
