Bernard Waber was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 27, 1924.
He was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and later at the Museum School of Fine Art in Philadelphia (1946 - 1950) - also at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1950 - 51).
Bernard Waber entered college thinking that art and writing were too frivolous to consider as a serious career.
He was majoring in finance until World War II interrupted and the army took him away from his studies. When he returned, he enrolled in the Philadelphia College of Art, where he says he found true joy.

| Bernard was captivated by children?s books and as of 1961, that has been his primary interest. Whenever someone viewed his portfolio, they told him his drawings would have great appeal to children, so he began writing & illustrating children?s tales and hasn?t stopped since.
