Elfrida Vipont was born in Manchester, Lancashire on July 3, 1902.
She was educated at Manchester High School for Girls and later at Mount School, a Quaker boarding school for girls in York.
Both her parents were members of prominent Quaker families and were active in Quaker life in Manchester.
On leaving school Elfrida enrolled at Manchester University to read History but 'dropped-out' before completing her course in order to concentrate on a musical career - she was a singer of considerable promise giving many recitals throughout the country.

Elfrida Vipont is remembered as a writer of Quaker and children's literature. Her most famous book for children was 'The Elephant and the Bad Baby' (Hamish Hamilton, 1969).
Elfrida won the Carnegie Medal in 1950 for 'Lark On The Wing'.
Elfrida Vipont died in March 1992 at the age of 90.
