Alice Dalgliesh was born in Trinidad, West Indies on October 7 1893.
Alice emigrated with her family to the US in 1902 and was educated at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New york and later at the Teachers College, Columbia University, new York where she gained a diploma in kindergarten teaching.
On leaving university, and for the next 17 years, Alice went on to teach kindergarten and elementary eduction at the Horace Mann School, New York.
From 1934 - 1960 Alice Dalgliesh was the editor of children's books for the HUGE publishing house, Charles Scribner's Sons, New York.

Alice Dalgliesh wrote more than 40 books for and about children. Her stories often drew on her own life experiences and are written in a 'casual' style that made easy reading for the younger eye.
It is perhaps her information books that are her most popular - many have gone through various editions, and in the case of America Travels, the second edition is revised and enlarged.
Alice Dalgliesh died on June 11, 1979. |
