Magaret Mahy was born in Whakatane, New Zealand on March 21, 1936 and wrote her first story at the age of just seven years of age.
Being the oldest of a family of five is perhaps why family life dominates most of Margaret's stories.
After graduating from Auckland University College and Canterbury University College, in 1955, with a BA, Margaret then attended the New Zealand Library School in Wellington, received her Librarian's diploma, and then went to work for the Petone Public Library.
She studied philosophy at university in Auckland and Christchurch, and then qualified as a librarian, specialising in children?s reading.

In 1968, an American publisher spotted one of Margaret's stories which had been published in a journal issued to New Zealand schools. They asked for more and Margaret sent them one hundred different stories ? fifteen years of unpublished work! They were accepted, giving Margaret her first big break.
In 1980 she became a fulltime writer and has since won the Eshter Glen Medal of the New Zealand Library Association in 1983 for 'The Haunting'. She has also been awarded the Carnegie Medal of the British Library Association three times ? for 'The Haunting' in 1982, 'The Changeover: A Supernatural Romance' in 1986 and for 'The Memory' in 1987.
