Thornton W Burgess Arthuor's Star Sign
Nationality - American Profession - Author
 Date of birth - 14 01 1874 Date of death - 1965
Place of birth - Sandwich : Massachusetts
Thornton Waldo Burgess was born at Sandwich, Massachusetts, US on January 14, 1874.

Burgess was brought up by his mother in Sandwich after his father died the same year he was born. They both lived in humble circumstances, often with relatives, and Thornton would tend cows, pick berries, sell candy and trap muskrats to bring in a small income.

Thornton had a keen interest in nature and it's wonderful array of animals and would spend much of his spare time wandering the local countryside - it was this experience that would lead him to write many books about animals.

Thornton Waldo Burgess
His first book, 'Old Mother West Wind', published in 1910, introduces the reader to many of the characters that are to be found in his later books and stories. These characters include Peter Rabbit, Jimmy Skunk, Sammy Jay, Bobby Raccoon, Joe Otter, Grandfather Frog, Billy Mink, Jerry Muskrat, Spotty the Turtle and of course, Old Mother West Wind and her Merry Little Breezes.

Burgess has written more than 170 books, mainly for children, and 15,000 stories for daily columns in newspapers.

Unlike many other nature stories of the time, the Burgess stories were always based on fact making them educational as well as entertaining. And, as Burgess's voluminous correspondence shows, they were enjoyed by adults and children alike.

Thornton's books have been published in many languages, including Swedish, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Gaelic.

In 1960, Burgess published his last book, Now I Remember, an autobiography depicting memories of his early life in Sandwich, as well as his career highlights. That same year, Burgess at the age of 83, had published his 15,000th story. From 1912 to 1960, without interruption, Burgess wrote a syndicated daily newspaper column titled "Bedtime Stories".

Thornton W. Burgess died on June 5, 1965 at age 91.
