Alison Uttley was born Alice Taylor in Cromford, Derbyshire, 1884, and was educated at the Lea School in Holloway and the Lady Manners School in Bakewell.
Alison developed a love for science which culminated in a scholarship to Manchester University to read physics, and in 1906 she became only the second woman honours graduate of the university.
Having trained as a teacher in Cambridge, she took up the post of Physics teacher at the Fulham Secondary School for Girls in 1908.
In 1911, she met and married James Arthur Uttley, by whom she had one son, John Corin Taylor (1915-1978).

James Uttley's health was permanently impaired by his service in the first World War, and he died in 1930, leaving Alice with the need to support herself and her son, which she did by turning her hand to writing.
In 1929 she published her first children's book, The Squirrel, The Hare and the Little Grey Rabbit - this was the beginning of her very popular 'Grey Rabbit' series.
Alison wrote another series about a pig named Sam and a fantasy entitled Traveller in Time, in which a modern girl becomes involved in the attempt by a 16th century family to rescue Mary, Queen of Scots.
Over the next 45 years Uttley wrote over 100 books, most of them for children.
Alison Uttley died in hospital on 7th May 1976. |
