 Ted Rand Arthuor's Star Sign
Nationality - American Profession - Illustrator
 Date of birth - 27 Dec 1915 Date of death - 2005
Place of birth - Mercer Island :
Ted Rand was born December 27, 1915, at his family's home on Mercer Island. His mother was a teacher, and his father was superintendent of Luther Burbank School, a school for wayward boys that was operated by Seattle Public Schools.

Rand spent his early years traveling the world -- on tramp steamers and the legendary liner Normandie. "I saw Hitler speak in Munich," he once said, "and I saw Mussolini speak in Rome. You had to feel something was coming (but) I was too dumb to be scared." He later joined the Naval Air Corps as a navigator in the Pacific.

Rand was a graphic artist at Frederick & Nelson and The Bon March? before co-founding the long-running Graphic Studios. At 37, he was enough of a comer that Time magazine and the Seattle Chamber of Commerce dubbed him a "Newsmaker of Tomorrow."

Also skilled in fine art, he painted the official portrait of Gov. John Spellman, which still hangs in the governor's office. His other portrait subjects included opera impresario Cecilia Schulz and various Saudi royals.

For more than two decades Rand taught illustration part-time at the University of Washington, where one of his students was David Horsey, the Post-Intelligencer's two-time-Pulitizer-winning political cartoonist.

His most enduring legacy, however, are the 78 children's books he illustrated through the years, working with such authors as Bill Martin Jr., Eve Bunting, Jean Craighead George and his wife, whose picture books include the "Salty Dog" series.

Ted Rand died at his home on Mercer Island, March 2005, aged 89.
