Eleanor Estes was born in West Haven, Connecticut on May 9, 1906.
She began by working as a children's assistant in her hometown library, but when she became sick with tuberculosis, she spent the quiet days of her recovery writing down her childhood memories as a series of stories for young readers.
Three of her books were chosen as Newbery Honor Books from 1943 to 1945, The Middle Moffet (1942), Rufus M. (1943), and The Hundred Dresses (1944). In 1952, her Ginger Pye (1951) was given the Newbery Medal.
