Alexander McCall Smith was born in Zimbabwe 1948. He is a Professor of Medical Law, but also an author who has now written over fifty books including a range of popular children's books.
Winner of three Author of the Year awards in 2004 (British Book Awards, Booksellers' Association and Waterstones), Professor McCall Smith has served as Vice-Chairman of the Human Genetics Commission of the United Kingdom; a member of the International Bioethics Commission of UNESCO; Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the British Medical Journal and Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Roslin Institute.

| Today Alexander lives in Edinburgh with his wife Elizabeth (a doctor), their two daughters Lucy and Emily. His hobbies include playing wind instruments, and he is the co-founder of an amateur orchestra called "The Really Terrible Orchestra" in which he plays the bassoon and his wife Elizabeth plays the flute. |
