Lemony Snicket, real name Daniel Handler, is the author of the best selling Series of Unfortunate Events.
Born in 1970 and raised in San Francisco, Daniel attended Lowell High School and then graduated from Wesleyan University in 1992.
His Mother, Sandra Handler Day, was an opera singer and Daniel himself also sang opera in the 80's with the San Francisco Boys Chorus.
His Jewish father, Lou Handler, who fled Germany as a child used to tell young Daniel about the frightening events of the Holocaust.

No doubt these stories his father told him of Nazi Germany influenced his view of the world and later his writing.
Contrary to rumor, author Handler says the name "Lemony Snicket" is not intended to be a tribute to the cartoon character Jiminy Crickett; Handler claims the pseudonym was made up on the spur of the moment while researching material for his first book for adults, The Basic Eight.
A Series of Unfortunate Events, projected to be 13 novels when completed, follows the hard luck of the Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus and Sunny. Snicket narrates their piteous adventures and misfortunes at the hands of evil Count Olaf, a master of disguises and truly bad actor.
Daniel is married to Lisa Brown and they have one child, born in 2003. He now lives in a Victorian style house on a hill in San Francisco. |
