Born Astrid Anna Emilia Ericsson on November 14, 1907 on a farm called Nas outside the small town of Vimmerby in Sweden.
As a child, Astrid loved to read, particularly books which had girls as the heroine. She loved Anne of Green Gables and the Pollyanna books. After attending public school, she moved to Stockholm and married Sture Lindgren and had two children, before starting to write.
She wrote her first story, Britt-Mari Opens Her Heart in 1944. Her second book, Pippi Longstocking, which she wrote as a present for her daughter's tenth birthday, was first published in English, 1954. Astrid went on to write over 50 children's books.
Astrid Lindgren died peacefully in her home Monday 28th of January 2002, at the ripe old age of 95.

| Her burial ceremony took place in Stockholm on March the 8th 2002. A white horse followed the carriage through the streets of Stockholm as tens of thousands of people gathered to show Astrid their affections and admiration. The ceremony was so public it was even broadcast on Swedish TV.
