Born Denys James Watkins-Pitchford (known as 'BB') in Lamport, Northamptonshire, England on 1905.
Much of his childhood was spent exploring ponds, streams, hedgerows and woods about his home.
From the Northampton School of Art, he won a scholarship to study in Paris and, on his return, was accepted by The Royal College of Art and became assistant art master at Rugby School in 1930.
Denys is a prolific author who published many children's books from 1938 to 1975, including 'Down the Bright Stream', the sequel to 'The Little Grey Men'.
BB was also the author of many nonfiction titles for adults about the natural world and the illustrator of many beautiful books about England and its wildlife.
