Joan Aiken was born in Sussex, 1924, the daughter of the American poet, Conrad Aiken.
After attending Wychwood school in Oxford, she worked, initially, as a librarian for the UN Information Centre in London. She moved on to become features editor for Argosy magazine, before joining J Walter Thompson, briefly, as a copywriter. In 1955 she joined Argosy Magazine as features editor.
Joan Aiken is the author of 92 books, both for adults and children, with perhaps the best known being The Wolves of Willoughby Chase series.

Joan came from a literary family; as mentioned, her father was the well-known poet Conrad Aiken, and her brother, John Aiken, was also a published writer.
She typed all her books on a the same typewriter, never having moved onto computers which apparently she didn't like.
Joan Aiken died on 4 January, 2004. |
