Dorothy Noel Barrow was born in Manchester and is probably only known to Ladybird book collectors as the author of the first 11 books in series 497.
Dorothy, who never married, was a gym teacher for most of her career and the Ladybird books she wrote were her only effort in writing.
Being a competent artist, Dorothy had originally submitted her own drawings to accompany the stories of the Ladybird series 497, but Wills & Hepworth rejected them and decided that P B Hickling's illustrations were more appropriate.

Dorothy was related to Isaac Barrow (1630 - 1677) an English divine, scholar and mathematician who is generally given little credit for his role in the development of modern calculus; in particular, for his work regarding the tangent of the kappa curve.
Isaac Barrow was also a lecturer to the great Isaac Newton at Trinity College.
Another famous relative of Dorothy's was the author Reginald Barrow who wrote texts on Roman history etc.
Dorothy spent the last part of her life living in the village of Holme in the Lake District. |
