John Saunders was born in Sutton, Surrey on August 5, 1911.
He was educated at Epsom School and studied law at Oxford going on to Lincolns Inn becoming a Barrister.
His working life consisted of compiling legal text books and dictionaries. He also wrote articles for the Countryman Magazine and various newspapers during the 1950?s.
Another string to his bow was photography. Many of the Lucazade Ads in the 1950?s were taken by him and actually feature son and daughter. He also did other advertising photography as well as journalistic photography, working to the end of his life.
John had only one book published for children which was in fact a Ladybird book entitled The Tinker's Wig (1947).

'The Tinker's Wig' happens to be one of the rarest and most sought-after Ladybird books of all time. Incidentally, the boy in this story called Bruce is based on John's brother-in-law!
John's daughter remembers the illustrations were definitely done at the time and remembers her father being very disappointed in the choice of illustrator (F. Matania), who had been famous and very successful but was now very old fashioned. I know he felt that was a large part of the reason why the book was not very successful.
John Saunders died at Horley, Oxfordshire in 1992 - he had lived there since the early 1950?s.
