John Edward Masefield was born in Ledbury, Herefordshire, England on June 1, 1878.
John was educated at Warwick School from 1888 - 1890 leaving to join the Merchant Navy as a cadet on the training ship Conway.
He then spent several years in the United States. In 1897 he returned to England and was on the staff of the Manchester Guardian.
His first published book was 'Salt Water Ballads' (1902).
John continued to write poetry and 1910 saw the publication of his collected work 'Ballads and Poems'. This was followed by 'The Everlasting Mercy' (1911) and 'The Widow in the Bye Street' (1912).

Soon after the outbreak of the World War I, Masefield joined the Red Cross and served in France and then went on the Dardanelles expedition with an ambulance unit and witnessed the Gallipoli disaster.
John Masefield also wrote nine books for children with his first being 'A Book of Discoveries' (1910).
John Masefield died on May 12, 1967. |
