Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe an accomplished painter, printmaker, book illustrator and writer, son of a shoemaker become farmer, was born in Langley near Macclesfield. Tunnicliffe was noted for his depictions of birds, animals and of the English countryside.
At the age of 14 he won a scholarship to the Macclesfield School of Art, then attended the Manchester School of Art between 1915-1921.
He gained his diploma in painting in 1923. In 1928 he returned to Macclesfield earning his living mainly from commercial artwork, much of it from the farming industry.
He won the Gold Medal of The Royal Society For The Protection of Birds in 1975.

Much of Tunnicliffe's work depicted birds in their natural settings and other naturalistic scenes.
He illustrated Henry Williamson's Tarka the Otter. His work was also used to illustrate Brooke Bond tea cards and as a result was seen by millions of young people in the United Kingdom during the 1950s and 1960s.
He also illustrated a number of books including 5 very popular Ladybird Books - What to look for in Spring, What to look for in Summer, What to look for in Autumn, What to look for in Winter and The Farm. |
