Cornelia Funke was born in Dorsten, Germany 1958.
Cornelia grew up in the region of Westphalia, which is situated in the middle of Germany. When she was 18, she moved to Hamburg,
Cornelia first worked as a book illustrator, but at 28, decided to write her own stories.
The Thief Lord was the first of Cornelia's books to be translated into English and it was a best-seller in both the United Kingdom and America (where it reached number 2 on the New York Times Bestseller List).
The Thief Lord has won awards in Switzerland, Austria and America and has been shortlisted for W H Smiths "People's Choice" Book Award 2003.
