Roger Hargreaves was born in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire in 1935. After a year working in the family laundry business he decided to seek a career in advertising. He worked as a successful copyrighter for 20 years creating ads for the likes of Lindt Chocolate, Timex and Pimms, rising to become creative director at two major London agencies.
However, he had always wanted to become a cartoonist and after a number of unsuccessful ideas, he hit upon the Mr. Men concept. The Mr Men were born after Roger's son Adam asked what a tickle was!

The first six characters were an instant success, selling over 1 million copies in 3 years. The characters found even greater fame when the BBC commissioned a television series in 1975, narrated by Arthur Lowe.
Roger Hargreaves? new found wealth enabled him to give up his office job and concentrate on writing and illustrating children?s books. He created a number of series of other books, most notably Timbuctoo, and he continued to add to the ever-growing list of Mr. Men. He introduced the Little Miss books in the early1980?s, which quickly added a whole new dimension and strength to the Mr. Men series.
When the author and artist died in 1988 his son, Adam, took over the running of the business and the creative development of the characters.
