Date of birth - 1862 Date of death - 1930
 Place of birth - :
Who was Franklin W. Dixon? All Hardy Boys books list Franklin W. Dixon as the author!! There's only one problem... Franklin W. Dixon never existed!

But Edward L. Stratemeyer (1862-1930) did exist and it was he who created Joe and Frank Hardy, along with dozens of other series characters in juvenile fiction.

Through his Stratemeyer Syndicate, Edward hired authors to write stories from his outlines. They got paid to write the texts, as well as agree never to reveal that they, and not the mythical Mr. Dixon, wrote the books.

Edward Stratemeyer was born October 4, 1862, son of Henry Julius, a tobacconist and dry goods dealer.

Growing up Edward worked in his fathers tobacco shop after graduating from high school. He published his first book at a young age while still working for his father. Edward published his first book at 24 years of age.

Edward L. Stratemeyer - founder of the Hardy Boys
Edward started writing by editing for some local magazines. All of Edwards books that he published were in form of series books starting in 1888. In 1906 he founded the Stratemeyer Literary syndicate and the syndicate wrote over 800 books under the name Franklin W. Dixon; in total Edward probably wrote 220 books and the rest were written by the team of syndicate writers. In general the genre of his books were a type of adventure mystery.

Edward L. Stratemeyer and Harriet Stratemeyer Adams and their employees also wrote Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys and the Bobsey Twins under the names of Carolyn Keene, Franklin W, Dixon and Laura Lee Hope. When Edward L. Stratemeyer died in 1930 Harriet carried on with the buisness.
