Ali Smith was born in Inverness in 1962.
She studied for her first degree in Aberdeen but moved to Cambridge to do a PhD in American and Irish modernism.
Ali originally worked as a college lecturer in Scotland but changed her focus to writing after falling ill with chronic fatigue syndrome.
Smith published a collection of short stories after moving to Cambridge and released her debut novel Like in 1997.
