Joseph Eugene Chipperfield was born in St. Austell, Cornwall, England on April 20, 1912.
Chipperfield was privately educated and spent alot of his freetime as a child exploring the local countryside, watching animals in their natural habitat.
His married Ann Tully whilst working as Editor for the Author's Literary Service in London.
After leaving the ALS he worked as a scriptwriter on several documentaries.
Chipperfield also penned a few books using the psuedonym John Eland.

His best book is reckonedto be Storm of Dancerwood which was revised a reprinted several times - the story is about an Alsatian dog and a blind vixen who have a curious and gentle relationship which ends in her death.
Chipperfield wrote at least 30 books for children and one book aimed at all ages called The Story of a Great Ship (1959).
