Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe was born at Hoddam Castle, Annandale, on the 15th May, 1781, the thrid son of Charles Sharpe of Hoddam.

Sharpe was a close friend of Robert Burns, being a violinist and a composer of music and verse. He was also a prominent local Freemason.
