Lucy Maria Wood Boston was born December 18, 1892 in Southport, Lancashire, England. She purchased a manor house at Hemingford Grey, Huntingdonshire, England in 1939 and spent two years restoring the old home. The manor house served to be her inspiration and she wrote a series of six books, known as the "Green Knowe" books, in which it was a central character.
She has one son, Peter, who has illustrated the majority of her children's books. She wrote prolifically until her death in 1990 at the age of 98.
