Geoffrey Brace was born in Bristol on February 18, 1930.
He was educated at Queen Elizabeth's Hopsital and Bristol University (BA hons French).
From the age of 14 music was to become Geoffrey's biggest interest, but unfortunately he was never able to study a degree in music because his school's music teacher had gone off to serve in the Second World War.
Geoffrey edited and wrote educational music books mainly for C.U.P Something to Sing series (1963-80). 'Listen' series (1976-81). A young man's Fancy' Macmillan (1986). All Aboard Macmillan(1985). Biography of Anna Storace. Thames Publishing (1991).

The Ladybird book 'The Story of Music' was written by Geoffrey and was an attempt to give a simply written history of music that was not centred on just the euroopean classic tradition. Geoffrey sent the text to Ladybird off the cuff and they decided to publish it. Geoffrey remembers being sent the original Martin
Aitchison illustrations to check for mistakes (there were a few), and being disappointed at not being able to buy one.
Geoffrey has always ran choirs and amateur orchestras. He still does two classes a week called 'Anyone can Sing' aimed at people who have never sung before. |
