was designed to help children who had grasped the basics of
reading to progress further, and was made an enjoyable experience
with the retelling of traditional fairy tales.
With their distinctive black covers and large title text,
this series was received well by parents and schools, so much
so that Ladybird reprinted the 24 titles several times over
the years.

In 1999, when the Ladybird factory closed, the last books to come out of the bindery were 210 hand-made versions of Tootles the Taxi (series 413) - one for each member of staff as a leaving gift
