Ladybird series 651
Natural History
9 titles published between 1940 - 1980

Like many of Ladybird’s, 651 was a sporadic series, released under the generic title of "A Ladybird Natural History Book".

Life of the Honey-bee, a delightful addition to the series and without doubt my favourite from this series, saw a new author illustrator team for Ladybird - the writer W Sinclair obviously had a passion for bees and illustrators Jill Payne sets the mood perfectly for the subject matter.

Timeless advice is also given for the handling of bees - "tuck your trouser legs into your socks to avoid bees crawling up your legs", perhaps something that most of us might forget to do when getting the honey. We also learn how to spot the difference between the ‘round dance’ and the ‘waggle dance’!

Random fact

The Tinker's Wig (series 478) is the only Ladybird book to have gilt lettering used on it's front board -it was also twice the size of a standard Ladybird book.
