Fairy tales and
rhymes 17 titles published
between 1940 and 1980
Series 413 was Wills & Hepworth's
second Ladybird book series. The first title, Nursery
Rhymes, was published in 1941. There have
been 17 titles published in this series between 1940 and
1980.
The first 11 books from series 413 were originally published
with dust-wrappers - many of the front boards in this
series were printed in full colour showing the same illustration
as that on the dust-wrapper. The
Circus Comes to Town, Tootles the Taxi, Nursery Rhymes
and Red Riding Hood
are exceptions to this as their boards were not full-colour
but instead a lined drawing.
The pages to the first 11 books had a glossy finish to
them, which through time has helped keep some of these
early editions in very good condition.
This popular series of fairy tales and rhyming stories
were mostly written by Muriel
Levy, but other authors include Geoffrey
Lapage, Gilda Lund,
B Lewis, Denis
Constanduros and Joyce
B Clegg who was the author of the ever-popular
Tootles the Taxi.
The 413 books were accompanied with wonderful full-page,
colour illustrations by various artists including, George
Brook, Robert Knight,
John Kenney and
J H Wingfield.
As with the first series (401), 413 was again a great
success with young readers who were enchanted by fairy
tales such as Jack and the Beanstalk,
Cinderellaand Red Riding Hood.
