Synopsis

This is a beautifully illustrated story about a duck called Beaky, who through her greediness is made to look rediculous in the eyes of all her farmyard friends.

It is only through the help of the wise old owl that she is able to overcome her shame, and return to her brothers and sisters once more, determined never to be greedy again.

Opening text

This is a story about a duck, a white-all-over duck with a yellow bill and yellow legs. She lived in a farmyard with her six brothers and sisters, and she was the only white-all-over duck among them. She was rather proud of this and kept herself very clean and tidy.

First edition issue points for collectors

Hardback book issued with dust-wrapper. Original price of 2'6 Net. Red / pink boards with picture pasted to the front (same as illustration on dust-wrapper). Illustrated endpapers. Front endpaper on verso states "First published 1951". Catalogue page at the rear of the book shows 'The First Day of Spring' from series 474 as the last title listed.

Dust-wrapper should be yellow - later editions are red. Writing on spine runs from bottom to top as on the book itself. Back inside flap of the dust-wrapper shows an open-winged Ladybird logo - below this logo are six titles of which Beaky is the last.

Later dust-wrappered editions of this title would have "A LADYBIRD BOOK" printed on the front of the wrapper at the bottom.
